Meine Mutter ist Dänin und lebte als junges Mädchen in einem Nachbarort von Billund, dem Hauptsitz der Firma LEGO^®. So ergab es sich, dass sie mit der Familie Kirk Kristiansen Kontakt hatte, mit der jüngsten Tochter gemeinsam zur Schule fuhr und auch mal im Wohnzimmer des „Löwenhauses“ gewesen ist. Hier muss sie sich den LEGO^®-Bazillus eingefangen haben, der dann auf mich übertragen wurde.

Ich bin Ralf und ‚übersetze‘ verschiedenartigste Dinge aus der Realität in die LEGO^®-Welt.

Meinen ersten Bausatz aus dem Hause LEGO^®, das im Englischen „European Taxi“ genannte Modell mit der Nummer 315, habe ich noch heute. Er hat mich auch in den sogenannten „Dark Ages“ (im LEGO^®-Jargon die Zeit, in der man mit LEGO^® nichts zu tun hat, also Ausbildung, Beruf, Familie …) stets begleitet. Dieses Modell also legte wahrscheinlich um 1965 herum den Grundstein der dann stetig zunehmenden Menge an Steinen, die sich in meinem Elternhaus befand.

Als 1977 das große Technic-Auto-Chassis Nr. 853 unter dem Weihnachtsbaum lag, war meine Freude groß! Ich erinnere mich, wie ich noch in der Heiligen Nacht stundenlang im Spielkeller das Modell baute – und wieder zerlegte. Da ich feststellte, dass das Modell zwei wesentliche „Macken“ hatte, entschloss ich mich, für Abhilfe zu sorgen. Und das war der Beginn des Entstehens diverser Modelle, meistens Autos ohne konkrete Vorbilder, in denen ich Eigenschaften verbaute, die es bei LEGO^® selbst erst Jahre später gab, wie z. B. Differenzialgetriebe, Federung, Allradantrieb und -lenkung.

Nach den Irrungen und Wirrungen des Lebens ergab es sich 2017, dass ich als Übersetzer von The Wordworms die Übersetzung für das Buch „LEGO^®-Autos bauen!“ anfertigen durfte. Die Gründung der 2. Firma The Brickworms [Link] war die ‚logische‘ Folge, in der ich gemeinsam mit meiner Frau Gel zunächst begann, neben Büchern mit Bauanleitungen die für den Bau der darin beschriebenen Modelle benötigten Steine als Bausätze anzubieten.

Und dann kam der Schlüssel-Moment, als ein Cousin aus Dänemark anfragte, ob ich, zum Jaguar E-Typ im Auto-Buch passend, einen Jaguar Mk II entwickeln könnte. Bis zu dem Zeitpunkt hatte ich zwar noch nie Autos nach Vorbild gebaut, begab mich aber an die durchaus reizvolle Aufgabe. Heraus kam mein erstes auf der Realität basierendes Automodell. Es ergaben sich weitere Modelle, und weitere Übersetzungsaufträge zu diesem Thema folgten.

2021 ist das erste Buch mit von mir entwickelten Modellen, „LEGO^®-Loks bauen!“ entstanden. 2023 folgten zwei weitere Bücher: „Fische aus den Sieben Meeren“ und „50 historische LEGO^®-Fahrzeuge – en miniature“, die in Zusammenarbeit mit Gel entstanden.

Inzwischen bekomme ich immer mehr Anfragen und Aufträge von Kunden, die sich maßgefertigte Modelle wünschen. Einige Beispiele findest du auf der Seite „Kundenmodelle“.

My mother is Danish, and as a young girl, she lived in a town neighbouring Billund, headquarters of the LEGO^® company. That’s how she came to have contact with the Kirk Kristiansen family, went to school with the youngest daughter, and was also even in the living room of the ‘Lion House’ a few times. This must have been where she caught the LEGO^® bug that was then transmitted to me.

I’m Ralf, and I ‘translate’ the widest range of things from real life into the LEGO^® world.

I still have my first LEGO^® kit, model number 315 known as the European Taxi. It even accompanied me throughout the so-called ‘dark ages’ (in LEGO^® jargon, the time when you have nothing to do with LEGO^®, i.e., focusing on education, career, family…). This model probably also laid the foundation for the steadily increasing number of bricks in my parents’ house in 1965.

When I unwrapped the big Technic Auto Chassis no. 853 that lay under the Christmas tree in 1977, I was very happy! I remember spending hours building the model in the playroom on Christmas Eve – and dismantling it again. Since I discovered that the model had two major ‘flaws’, I decided to remedy the situation. And that was the beginning of the creation of various models – mostly cars without specific prototypes, in which I incorporated features that only appeared at LEGO^® years later, such as differential gears, suspension and four-wheel-drive and steering.

After the trials and tribulations of life, it was in 2017 that I was presented with the opportunity to translate the book LEGO^®-Autos bauen! as a translator at The Wordworms. Founding the second company, The Brickworms, was the logical consequence, in which I and my wife Gel first began to offer, alongside books with building instructions, the bricks needed to build the models included therein as kits.

And then came the pivotal moment when a cousin from Denmark asked whether I could develop a Jaguar Mk II to match the Jaguar E-Type in the car book. Up to that point I had never built cars based on prototypes, but I took on the task, which was definitely an enticing one. The result was my first car model based on reality. Further models emerged, and further translation jobs on this topic followed.

The first book with models developed by me, LEGO^®-Loks bauen!, was created in 2021. In 2023, two more books created in collaboration with Gel followed: Fishes of the Seven Seas and 50 Historic LEGO^® Vehicles – Miniaturised.
